BMWs are can be quiet cars that roll under the radar, the kind of beauties that don’t call attention to themselves – until they do. They’re classy enough to look classy with anyone behind the wheel. And there are quite a few memorable movies that feature BMWs, which are sometimes not so front and center, and at times, that one thing that makes audiences forget the scenery.
In “Invictus,” Nelson Mandela was shown riding a 1985 E38 7 series. As if having Mandela played perfectly by Morgan Freeman wasn’t amazing enough, imagine what the folks at BMW thought when the icon of African freedom had their creation as the presidential vehicle.
The first time Pierce Brosnan played James Bond was in “Goldeneye.” He was put in the driver’s seat of the newly unveiled 1995 E36/7 Z3. Being in a Bond film catapulted the Z3 to superstar status, and all the missiles behind those headlights made for an even sweeter ride.
1998’s “Ronin,” which starred Robert DeNiro, Jean Reno, and Sean Bean, had one of the most electrifying and gripping car chases ever to be filmed. In this highly-charged scene, DeNiro’s Peugeot and Natascha McElhone’s E34 535i engaged in an epic chase that destroyed half of Paris traffic.
Then there’s the 735i of Jason Statham’s character in “The Transporter.” Critics saw the film as a mediocre action movie with a ton of balls-to-the-wall driving. Statham showed what a modified version of a Bimmer could do. This was perhaps the magnum opus of BMW driving on film.
