BMW M5: Perfect Fusion Of Beauty and Power

BMW calls the M5 “The Untouchable” for a good reason.

From the design to the efficiency to the driving dynamics, the M5 is the epitome of German engineering. Thus, it is no surprise that the M5 is heralded as one of the top, if not the top saloon manufactured ever.

And what makes the M5 such an epic ride?

It all starts with its engine. The very first model in the M5 series, the E28, was transplanted with the M88 engine (for the European and South African M5s, S38 for the North American version) from the carmaker’s legendary M1 line. The E28 M5 may look like a standard sedan, but it is embedded with a large and powerful engine – a supercar in disguise. As BMW boldly proclaimed in one of its ads, it is an athlete in a tuxedo. The E28 M5 can keep up and as some enthusiasts pointed out, can even outperform powerful cars such as the Porsche 928 S. With such epic performance, the E28 M5 was nicknamed “wolf in sheep’s clothing” by owners and fans.

The powerful engine performance that made the E28 renowned continued as the M5 series expanded. The latest model boasts the M TwinPower Turbo V8 petrol engine. With 560 hp (412 kW) and a torque of up to 680 Nm, the M5 propels from 0 to 100 km/h in only 4.3 seconds.

But the high-revving power unit of the M5 is not its only outstanding feature. While its engine delivers power, the M5’s is pure luxe. It proudly carries the distinguished look of the M series, which is not only a triumph of aesthetics but also of “the aerodynamic design of the exterior and the functionality of the interior.” This means that that the M5 cruises effortlessly even at triple-digit speed, a testament to its racetrack origin that was perfected for everyday use.
